Received 22 January 2007 My gt.gt.gt.grandfather Richard Eve moved from Essex in the late 1790's, with his wife Ann their sons and daughters, and grandchildren to New Road area of Balham. Then a small village. Quite a feat at the time. Once there he openend several businesses. Hairdressers, Greengrocer, tailors, China shop, stage coach and he may have been the licensee of "The George" where he dropped dead one day in February 1841. aged 72 years. leaving behind his widow Anne , The Business Directories through the years have shown that the Greengrocer side continued. His Son, also Richard, carried on the Greengrocer side and lived in Martindale Road. I believe there was a greengrocer run by an "Eve" in the 50's and 60's.Dorothy Cox nee EVE Received 13th October 2006 Hello This is a 'shot in the dark'! I'm trying to untangle my family history and one of my relations was: Dr L G Brewster 272, Balham High Street Balham Received 11th October 2006 Killi for cancer I was wondering if you could possibly help support my request for sponsorship? I'm a local Balham resident. Received 26th September 2006 Complaints about "Jacksons estate agents" I was just wondering if any body else has been effected by the finacial problems Jackson's Estate agents suffered during December 2005 I have been fobbed of with so many diffirent stories of why they are unable to return my deposit from a flat I began to rent in July of that year. Received 8th August 2006 Hello have you got any tips for forthcoming bootsales in the area? Thanks, Sasha Received 20th July 2006 from Steve Selby with reference to recent crime reports (See crime reports for details) You will notice that there are several burglaries where the thief got in through an open window. Obviously, with this exceptionally hot weather, you will want as many windows open as possible, but please take care when leaving the house, even for a short time, as the average burglary is over in a matter of a few minutes. Again, at night, please ensure that any accessible windows are secured if at all possible. There are window locks on the market which enable you to lock a window partially open, at least, although obviously not fully open. Please ensure that any valuables, such as laptops and cameras, are out of reach of all windows. Also take care when leaving your car unattended. It is all to easy to forget that you have left the windows open when parking; I have done it myself. There have been more and more thefts of satellite navigation systems; if you have one, remove both the unit and the holder when leaving the car unattended, if possible, so that you don't give a clue to the thief that there may be a system hidden in the boot. Regrettably, there have been more distraction burglaries reported. A number of the thefts in neighbouring boroughs have been by a man posing as a water board official, dressed each time in a vertically striped blue and white shirt. We have also had people posing as police officers and council officials. If you are not absolutely sure who you are letting in to your house, always ask for identifcation, check it carefully, and if not completely certain, refuse them entry and ask them to call back by appointment. You can then confirm their identity and also arrange for a friend or relative to be there when they return. Steve Selby Community Safety Division Wandsworth Council Received 26th June 2006 The Exhibit details:Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear what has happened to the Exhibit. We went on Monday evening when the only other diners were a table of 6 and two other tables of two. Despite this service was shambolic - the waitress was either new or of an excessively nervous disposition. Finger bowls arrived and were then removed by a second waitress, orders were mixed up and had to be redone and everything took an age. Cooking was disappointing. The Exhibit now has a cocktail bar and a cinema; what it actually needs is a decent restaurant manager. A classic case of spreading things too thinly - sometings gotta give and unfortunately this is the restaurant. Balham Kitchen & Bar details:A victim of its own success; BK & B has seen standards slide to mediocraty of late. Gone are the excellent value seafood platters that were one of the signature dishes of the venue. Also gone are the fat cut chips replaced by what can only be described as the dregs of the chip pan. Despite sending them back, they were replaced with something only marginally better for which I was charged £3.00. On far too many occasions items have 'sold out' or have 'finished' which for example, at 1.00pm on a not particularly busy Sunday lunchtime is unacceptable. The days of being the only decent place to eat in Balham are long gone and BK & B needs to pull its socks up if it intends to continue to pull in the customers as it has done previously. Jackie Jordan Received 24th April I am curious to know if there is any information linking Hitler to DuCane Court. I have heard that Hitler planned to use the building as his base in the event of an invasion. Is this urban myth? Many thanks Kevin Kevin Tynan mailto:ktynan@globeop.com Received 14th April Egg HuntI would like to thank the Balham Partnership for arranging such a fun day yesterday. My daughter and her best friend were eager to get to Balham to join in the Egg Hunt and arrived early. The staff on site were very helpful and said they could start early. They enjoyed looking for the eggs, but were delighted by the array of circus toys that awaited them when they got back to the start point. They spent half an hour playing happily and even came back to play after lunch. It was a very easy way of keeping them amused and out of mischief for a few hours. Thank you for taking the trouble to lay on this event. Janet Odden Received 29th March 2006 Hi, . Just wondered if you knew of any photos available on the web of the old Hurley's? I'm 51, live out of the Balham area now but kicked off life in Manville Road, and my sister & I used to love getting our Bunty and Jackie magazines etc from Hurley's ... we'd love to see the exterior/interior of it once again if possible. (I also remember butter being sliced in slabs in Sainsbury's and would love to see a pic of the interior of that too). If you can't help but know a man or woman who can please let me know. :-) Thanks a lot, Hilary Received 14 February 2006 New pub in Balham, called the 'The Clarence' 90-92 Balham High Road, Received 12 February 2006 Can you tell me if there is any connection between Emma Hamilton (friend
of Nelson) and Hamilton House on Balham High Street? I visited there many
years ago and was told there was, but find no mention of the connection
on your website. I live in the USA. Thank you. Received 12 February 2006 Ethel Mary Drew was a single Mother in 1924,from Balham Park Road, she
gave birth to a baby girl Dorothy,(my Mother)whom she had to give away.
I am longing to find any information about this lady. Could anyone help
me? Received 13/12/2005 I am trying to trace a name which may be on the War Memorial at Balham Parish Church. I looked at the Church site but there was no contact address. The name is of our uncle, John George Clifton, killed 20 August 1918 in Flanders. He was serving with the London Scottish Regiment. His parents lived at 71 Salford Road, Steatham but had lived at 43 Gosberton Road, Balham until shortly before Jack died. We have visited his grave at Godewaersvelde. Yours sincerely Brenda Clifton (Wakefield) Received 01/12/2005 We have had reports of two men a blue Ford car ( model unknown ) stopping
elderly people and offering them presents if they will accept a lift home.
The driver of the car is a white male, aged 40, of stocky build. The I have also attached a nomination form for the Wandsworth Young Person
of the Year Award. I am sure you all know someone who deserves this award. Steve Selby
