The Balham Society

Local history society for Balham & Upper Tooting
Tel: John Rattray 020 8675 4854
Email: john.rattray@amserve.net

The Balham Society is the amenity and local history society for Balham and Upper Tooting.  We hold meetings addressed by guest speakers, and usually illustrated with slides, about the history of Balham and Tooting and of neighbouring areas.  During the summer months we also conduct local history walks in the area.

We are also concerned with present-day matters.  We monitor local planning applications, making representations where necessary, and assist residents in objecting to unsympathetic planning proposals.  We are represented on Wandsworth Council's Conservation Areas Advisory Committee.  In 1989 we helped to set up the Balham Triangle Action Group, which opposed redevelopment of Balham Town Centre and promoted better options, some of which have come to fruition.

We help to protect the wonderful commons which surround Balham, and we have a seat on the Tooting Commons Management Advisory Committee.
We also have other activities from time to time, and we welcome anyone who lives or works in Balham, or who has an interest in our town.

In 2000 we performed our Millennium Concert, A Thousand Years in Words and Music, as part of the Festival weekend in Elham Parish Church in Kent.
