The Balham Society is the amenity and local history society for Balham and Upper Tooting. We hold meetings addressed by guest speakers, and usually illustrated with slides, about the history of Balham and Tooting and of neighbouring areas. During the summer months we also conduct local history walks in the area.
We are also concerned with present-day matters. We monitor local planning applications, making representations where necessary, and assist residents in objecting to unsympathetic planning proposals. We are represented on Wandsworth Council's Conservation Areas Advisory Committee. In 1989 we helped to set up the Balham Triangle Action Group, which opposed redevelopment of Balham Town Centre and promoted better options, some of which have come to fruition.
We help to protect the wonderful commons which surround Balham, and we have a seat on the Tooting Commons Management Advisory Committee.
We also have other activities from time to time, and we welcome anyone who lives or works in Balham, or who has an interest in our town.

Established in 1886, the South West London Choral Society is an amateur choir of some fifty members. We meet on Mondays at Balham Baptist Church, 21 Ramsden Road, London SW12 (nearest Underground Station: Balham). Rehearsals start at 7.30pm, and last till 9:30pm with a short break for coffee.
MUSIC AVAILABLE FOR HIRE - CONCERT TOURS ABROAD
During each of three yearly terms, we rehearse and perform a different work, usually in one of Wandsworth’s churches. We sing a variety of music and aim to make choral music enjoyable for both performers and audience alike. In past years we have also given concerts in St Omer, Calais, Bruges, Brussels and Lille. In 2000 we performed our Millennium Concert, A Thousand Years in Words and Music, as part of the Festival weekend in Elham Parish Church in Kent.
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
We hold a variety of fund-raising and social events during the year; an annual jumble sale, carol singing engagements, raffles, barn dances, etc.. Social activities include parties, quiz evenings and barbecues.
NO AUDITION
We are pleased to welcome all voices - soprano, alto, tenor and bass. We ask only that you are enthusiastic, committed - and sing in tune.
Southside Players
Southside Players are a local Drama group that were formed in 1987. The group produces 3 main shows a year at Chestnut Grove School, these vary from Shakespeare to Pantomime, and include comedies, dramas and musical revues. In 2003 the group won the regional NODA award for our production of Our Country's Good and last year the production of Steel Magnolias was also nominated.
We are always glad to welcome new members, to tread the boards or work backstage or front of house. In addition to our main productions we perform smaller scale works, rehearsed readings and have an active social side including theatre trips and barbecues. Visit the website for more information.
