Wandsworth in Bloom 2005 launched

Spring is in the air and once again Wandsworth Council is calling on all green fingered enthusiasts to take part in the annual Wandsworth in Bloom competition.

This year’s event was launched on Thursday, March 17 by cabinet member for environment and public services, Cllr Kathy Tracey along with pupils from St Boniface School. The Tooting based school was second runner up in the best blooming school category of the competition last year.

The competition, organised by the council’s leisure and amenity services department, is open to anyone who lives or works in the borough and hundreds of pounds worth of prizes and certificates can be won. Categories include best blooming front garden, best blooming pub, best blooming business premises and best blooming school.

There is also the tallest and shortest sunflower category, which is open to adults and children. Entrants can get their free sunflower seeds and growing instructions from Wandsworth libraries. There is a £50 prize for the tallest sunflower grown by an adult, £50 for the tallest grown by a child and a £25 prize for the winner of the shortest sunflower grown by a child.

Young people aged up to 16 can also take part in the competition by entering the new Best Blooming Flowery Sculpture category. Participants can enter either as individuals or as a group or class and create their own flower, plant, tree or shrub sculpture using recyclable materials including paper, card, wood, metal or plastic. Completed sculptures should be no taller than 30cm

All entries must be received by Friday, June 24.Entries for the tallest and shortest sunflower competition need to register the height of their entry before Tuesday, September 6.
